RE: Lake Dillon, Colorado

I drove past Heaton Bay last weekend and they were still logging it. It didn't appear as though many trees were left, but the logging equipment tore up the grounds around the area pretty good. I'd guess they could get it fixed up by June or July, but you should call the FS.

Arkansas River Near Texas Creek, CO

Can anyone recommend somewhere to camp (either dry or with hookups) near Texas Creek, CO on the Arkansas River? I know there are a few RV parks along the river, but I'm looking for recommendations.

RE: Denver to Gunnison - Current Road Conditions???

Yes, I checked the road conditions and they have been changing daily, even hourly. I guess what I'm really interested in is whether 24 from CO Springs or 50 from Pueblo is a safer route when the weather is bad?

Denver to Gunnison - Current Road Conditions???

I'm going to be traveling from Denver to Gunnison this weekend and I'm trying to plan a safe route as I will be traveling during the nite. I usually take 287, but it keeps shutting down because of the blowing snow around Jefferson and Fairplay. I was thinkning of taking the I-25 to Pueblo and cutting across on 50, but someone told me that 50 can get pretty hairy as well. The third option I have is to take 24 across from Colorado Springs, but it looks like it is a lot longer drive. Is anyone framiliar with these roads that can give me an idea of how bad they are right now with all of the snow? Any recommendaitons would be appreciated.

RE: Yamaha vs Honda Generator

I think the twin Honda 2000's with the parrallel kit is the best option.

RE: What size generator for PUP?

Another vote for the 2000. It rocks! It also came in pretty handy around the house when we had a power outage about a month ago.

RE: boondocking and generators

I agree with everyone on the Honda EU's. Last year was our first year RV'ing and we wanted to get into boondocking on the cheap. I purchased a generator from Costco that was rated at 68db, brought it home and set it up. When I started the darn thing, my wife and I couldn't talk at a normal voice level standing 25 feet from the thing. We both agreed that we would tick everyone off in the mountains that happened to be around us using this generator, so we returned it and bought a Honday Eu2000i last summer just to get by. It powers the basics, but we are thinking about buying a second one to parrallel them together to run the air conditioner this summer. The EU2000i is significantly quieter and is a lot better option if you don't have anyone to help you moving the thing (as it only weighs 56 lbs.). On top of it all, it's pretty easy to store on the shelf in the garage as well when they are not being used.

RE: Fifth wheel boondocking

We boondock in our 5'er as well. I adjusted my hitch and trailer for maximum clearance over my trucks bedrails (which is still only between 6-8 inches). I've come pretty darn close to resting (almost cracking) the trailer on the rails, but haven't done any damage as of yet (luckily, whew!). I would suggest starting out on easier terrain and get a feel for the angles you can make, especially while turning. You'll figure out what works for your set-up. Just take it really slow and use your head. It aslo helps if you have a spotter too inside the truck when making difficult turns with angles that will offset your truck and camper.

RE: Motorcycle carrier on back of Jayco TT

I'm doing the same thing for my 5'er. (I actually have the same bike too!) I started calling around to metal fabricators in my area and found someone that fabricates custom hitches for trailers, welding them directly to the frame. I'm taking mine in next month to get it done. The guy I'm having do mine said his custom hitches will hold #350, which is where I'm calculating mine will come in at. His trick is he reinforces the frame and esentially boxes in the back part of the frame with additional supports to prevent the weight from warping the frame (and walls) of the trailer. Just do your homework and call around. I'm sure you can find someone in your neck of the woods.

RE: CB Radios - Are RV'ers still using these?

Does anyone have any thought on the handheld / portable models?

RE: A great FREE service from Google.

Talking about Google services, have you guys tried Google Earth? It's a great way to see what a campground looks like before you go there.

RE: CB Radios - Are RV'ers still using these?

Thanks for the feedback. Are there any specific features or things I should look for when purchasing a CB Radio? Or, are they all pretty much the same?

CB Radios - Are RV'ers still using these?

I've been thinking about installing a CB radio in my tow vehicle to get updates on traffic and road conditions or in the case of an emergency. Are CB's still frequently used? I've done some research on the internet and a number of people claim they are, but I want to hear from the RV community to see if you guys find them useful. My wife and I have found ourselves stuck in traffic jams in the Rocky Mountains due to accidents, weather, etc. and it would sure be nice to know whats going on.

RE: Lookin for Feedback on RV parks in Denver area

If you want to be close to down-town, Flying Saucer Campground off Hampden and Santa Fe isn't to bad, but they have a big construction project going on around the clock building a new Cosco next door, so it may be a little loud, but it will put you within 15 minutes of downtown and it's only a 1/2 mile from the light rail station which goes downtown. You can camp down at Chatfield State Park, but that's about 45 minutes south of the city, but it's a nice clean campground. The trick will be finding places that are open in March as most are only open mid-May through mid-December.

RE: Best Forest Service Campgrounds in CO???

kplender - You're spot on with Rampart. It's a great place to ride, although it does get a little crouded on the weekend. We weren't able to take the 5'er out there last summer so I would just head down there for day trips. I've got it ready to go for this summer though and I'm anxious to get a few weekends in down there.

RE: Best Forest Service Campgrounds in CO???

OK, it's only fair that I share mine as well, although it's a short list. My wife and I have 1 year of RV'ing under our belts and love it. Last summer we visited Lake Irwin which was awesome and had some decent fishing. We also spent a night at a campground just down the valley from Taylor Reservoir which was really nice as well. I've tent camped at several around the Granby area, but nothing I can advise on taking an RV. Since we purchase our little Honda generator, I don't think we're going to return to the full hook-up campgrounds. (Except for Tiger Run which is in a class all it's own!) Anyone know of any good places around Granby that I can get my 5th wheel into and ride dirt bikes right out of the campground? I've done a tone of riding in that area in the past, before we bought the RV. Now I'm not sure where to take the RV to since most of my adventures in that area weren't RV accessible.

Best Forest Service Campgrounds in CO???

I'd like to hear peoples recommendations on the best rustic Forest Service Campgrounds in CO. I'm looking for the realy remote places that may have a vualted toilet and maybe a hand pump for water at most.

RE: Colorado Winter Camping / Skiing

Thanks for the tip on Steamboat. We stayed there in the summer. I forgot about that place.
